Draped Bust Dime

1796 - 1807

The first dimes were minted in 1796 and the design that was used is the same one that was put on the half dimes during the same years. The designer was likely Gilbert Stuart and the engraver was Robert Scot. The coins weighed 2.7 grams and were 89% silver and 11% copper.
This dime is a recent addition to my collection and one that I have wanted for a very long time but felt that I could not afford to purchase until a short time ago. This dime is certified by NGC as uncirculated and is worth about $4000. PCGS estimates that about 1,000 of these survive today. It is stored in the red box for certified coins in the SDB 508 in the bank. Only two Draped Bust dimes are valued much below $1000 in a G 4 grade and these are the 1805 and the 1807.   This is the reverse of the coin at left. The coin would be worth $8500 if not cleaned and repaired, in the PCGS price guide on the web. Only 165,000 of these dimes were minted this year and even an AG 3 is worth $250.
